NTSB probes fatal crash of Los Angeles news helicopter
A television news helicopter crashed in the Chatsworth area of Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, killing three people. The NTSB and FAA are investigating.
A news helicopter went down in the Chatsworth section of Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, killing three people, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, which has opened an investigation.
The aircraft was a Eurocopter AS 350 B2 flown by Angel City Air on behalf of NBC4 Los Angeles and Telemundo 52. It came down while its crew was covering a separate fatal collision involving a Metro bus and an SUV. Authorities said the helicopter caught fire after it struck an industrial area.
Two of the dead were aboard. NBC named them as aerial journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, both employees of Angel City Air. A third person died on the ground. Two others were taken to hospital.
More than 70 firefighters were sent to the scene and put out the blaze, which damaged several vehicles and storage containers nearby. No determination has been made about what caused the crash. The NTSB is working the case with the Federal Aviation Administration.
