Paderborn airport gets federal funds for mobile aircraft air-conditioning units

Paderborn/Lippstadt airport will get 390,000 euros from the Federal Ministry of Transport to buy three mobile air-conditioning units for parked aircraft, and is putting in another 175,000 euros of its own money.

The units, called pre-conditioned air systems, feed cooled or heated air to aircraft on the ground so the onboard auxiliary power unit does not have to run.

According to the airport, the equipment will run exclusively on self-generated solar power or certified green electricity from the grid. On that basis it expects annual savings of roughly 380,000 kilograms of kerosene and 1,120 tonnes of CO2.

The federal subsidy covers 69 percent of the project costs.
