Police probe attempted fence breach at Leipzig-Halle airport

A car is reported to have driven through a perimeter fence at Leipzig-Halle airport overnight and then fled, prompting an investigation. No suspects have been detained and no attribution has been made.

German police are investigating an attempted intrusion at Leipzig-Halle airport (LEJ) after a vehicle reportedly broke through outer fencing during the night of October 17 to 18, 2026. The car travelled a short distance onto the site before turning back and leaving, according to official sources cited in reports.

The area involved lies close to where several Russian cargo aircraft have been parked for an extended period. At least three Antonov An-124 freighters operated by Volga-Dnepr Group have remained on the ground there since the European Union barred Russian aircraft from its airspace following the invasion of Ukraine. Leipzig-Halle is among Europe's larger air cargo centres and has been used to move supplies destined for Ukraine during the conflict.

The airport dealt with a separate security episode in August 2026, when a drone carrying explosives was found inside the perimeter near Ukrainian cargo aircraft. A DHL freighter was reported to have struck another small drone the same night, and parts of a third drone were later recovered in woodland nearby. German authorities blamed that attempt on Russia and responded by ordering the Russian consulate in Bonn and Russia House in Berlin to close.

As of October 19, 2026, no one had been arrested over the fence incident, and officials had not assigned responsibility for it.
