Bedbugs found on board a Qantas Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner during a flight from Perth to Rome prompted the airline to take the aircraft out of service.

The insects were discovered on 9 October in the forward section of the economy cabin on flight QF5. The aircraft was cleaned thoroughly after landing in the Italian capital. The return flight from Rome to Perth, scheduled for 10 October, was cancelled.

A Qantas spokesperson said a problem had been identified at a small number of economy seats. The carrier apologised to the passengers affected and gave them hotel accommodation, rebooking them onto alternative connections within 48 hours.
