Seattle-Tacoma airport approves $2.5bn concourse rebuild with no new gates

The Port of Seattle has approved initial funding of more than $1 billion toward a broader $2.5 billion rebuild of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's S Concourse, according to the airport authority.

The project is meant to replace aging infrastructure rather than add capacity. No new gates are planned, despite the size of the investment.

Preliminary work is expected to start later in 2026. Major construction begins in 2027 and is scheduled to run until 2034, nearly a decade of work at one of the busiest airports on the US West Coast.

The airport authority has not fully outlined which facilities within the S Concourse will be replaced or renovated, and it has not said how operations will be managed during the extended construction period. Phased work is typical for projects of this size at active airports, though.

The rebuild fits a wider pattern of terminal modernization now under way at airports across the United States, where facilities built decades ago are being updated to meet current passenger volumes and expectations. Sea-Tac has seen steady growth in recent years and has pursued several infrastructure upgrades beyond this concourse project.

Funding details beyond the initial $1 billion authorization were not specified, including how the remaining balance of the $2.5 billion budget will be secured.
