Southwest Airlines is overhauling its Rapid Rewards loyalty programme, with changes rolling out in stages from November 2026 through 2027.

At the centre is a redesigned membership structure that takes effect on 1 January 2027 and rests on three tiers. Silver replaces the current A-List level. Gold takes the place of A-List Preferred. Platinum is new and sits at the top of the programme, including unlimited travel through the Companion Pass benefit.

Southwest said Rapid Rewards will keep its core features. Points do not expire, there are no blackout dates for redemption, and members can still qualify for status through eligible flights and Tier Qualifying Points.

The airline is also adding Milestone Rewards, meant to give members benefits before they reach a full tier. Travellers can pick intermediate rewards such as additional Rapid Rewards points or seat certificates on the way to Silver. Those between Gold and Platinum may qualify for three Companion Pass trips.

From January 2027, holders of Chase Rapid Rewards credit cards will receive accelerated benefits under the new model as well.

The changes go beyond the loyalty scheme. Southwest plans to open its first airport lounges and to equip its entire commercial fleet with high-speed Wi-Fi. The airline has also said it is weighing the addition of widebody aircraft, with the Boeing 787 under consideration.
