Lufthansa adds fuel uplift at Frankfurt as Zurich draws on jet fuel reserves
Lufthansa has told crews on some Frankfurt-bound flights to tanker extra fuel, while Switzerland authorised withdrawals from its jet fuel reserves to keep Zurich Airport supplied.

Lufthansa told crews on some Frankfurt-bound flights to take on extra fuel before departure, after pipeline maintenance cut supply capacity at its main hub. The airline called the extra fuelling on October 15, 2026 a precaution and said it did not expect cancellations.
Fuel carried into Frankfurt means aircraft need less there before their next sector, a practice known as tankering. Lufthansa said the measure was already having an effect and expected to wind it down soon. Short-haul flights were most affected, with some long-haul services also involved.
Fraport, which runs Frankfurt Airport, said the pipeline work was routine and long scheduled. It cited alternative supply routes and large storage holdings, and said it expected no bottleneck and no effect on the airport's operational capability.
In Switzerland, the government warned the same day that late and cancelled rail deliveries had left Zurich Airport short of jet fuel. Authorities cleared the release of up to 30,000 cubic metres, or 30 million litres, from mandatory reserves between October 15 and November 1, roughly 6.5 percent of the country's available mandatory jet fuel stocks.
Bern blamed freight disruption, particularly on rail links from Germany, which stopped deliveries arriving on schedule. Low water on the Rhine has pushed other cargo off the river onto a rail network already carrying heavy traffic, and missed jet fuel consignments could not be replaced quickly enough.
