Swedish Gripen fighters assist Polish air defence during Russian strike on Ukraine
Poland's armed forces command said Swedish Air Force Gripen jets took part in defending Polish airspace as Russia mounted a large overnight missile and drone assault on Ukraine. No violation of Polish airspace was recorded.

Swedish Air Force JAS 39 Gripen fighters took part in Polish air defence activity overnight on October 6-7, 2026, as Russia launched a large missile and drone assault on Ukraine, Poland's Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) said.
In a statement on X at 06:28 local time on October 7, DORSZ said the military aviation activity prompted by the Russian strikes had ended. No breach of Polish airspace was recorded. The command thanked the Swedish Air Force for its assistance in protecting Polish airspace.
Sweden said on September 30, 2026 that Gripen fighters would be sent to support NATO's integrated air and missile defence in Poland from October. Most of the aircraft are stationed in Sweden, with a smaller forward presence in Poland. They are also assigned to protect the Rzeszów-Jasionka logistics hub, which handles military and civilian aid bound for Ukraine.
DORSZ has previously confirmed to AeroTime that Poland's new positive-identification procedures also apply to allied aircraft defending its airspace. Those procedures let air defence forces act on positive identification without necessarily requiring visual identification of a target first.
Sweden is also deploying a Patriot air defence unit of about 100 personnel to Poland from December, with that mission expected to run into the first half of 2027.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 48 cruise missiles and 130 attack drones from 18:00 Kyiv time on October 6, 2026, alongside ballistic and anti-ship missiles.
