Syrian Airlines adds first of two A320s in fleet renewal push

Syrian Airlines has received the first of two Airbus A320 aircraft it is adding to its fleet, according to the carrier. The jet, registered YK-AKI, arrived in Damascus on 29 August after flying in from Baku, Azerbaijan.

The aircraft is reported to have previously flown for Heston Airlines on behalf of Azerbaijan Airlines. A second A320, registered YK-AKJ, is expected to join the fleet before the end of September; the carrier says that jet is currently being repainted.

Both aircraft will be configured with 156 seats across two cabins, including 12 business-class seats. Syrian Airlines said each aircraft went through inspection and maintenance checks intended to confirm compliance with international airworthiness standards.

The airline described the two jets as the start of a broader fleet expansion and modernisation plan, though it has not disclosed financial details of the purchase. Separately, Qatari-led partners last year outlined plans to redevelop Damascus airport, an agreement that reportedly includes financing for Syrian Airlines to acquire as many as ten A320 aircraft.

The additions come as the carrier works to rebuild operations following the change of government in Syria. No further detail on timing of the wider fleet plan has been provided.
