Thai Airways dismisses chief executive after operational disruption

Thai Airways has removed its chief executive with immediate effect, citing continuing operational problems following severe flooding. A board member takes over on an interim basis while a committee examines separate procurement allegations.

Thai Airways has dismissed chief executive Chai Eamsiri with immediate effect. The board blamed persistent operational problems that followed severe flooding from 25 September, the Bangkok Post reported.

Flights were delayed and more than 10,000 pieces of baggage and cargo shipments piled up. The carrier cancelled 24 flights in total for 1 and 2 October.

Board member Samrit Samniang has been appointed acting chief executive.

Separately, a committee is examining allegations against Chai relating to the procurement of 860,000 bottles of wine worth more than 800 million baht, about 21 million euros. The airline also plans to review its management structures and its use of subcontractors for ground and warehouse services.
