TU Berlin students win DLR design challenge with swappable-powertrain aircraft concept

A student team from Technical University Berlin has won the German Aerospace Center's annual design competition with a small research aircraft concept whose propulsion module can be replaced within a day.

A team of students from Technical University Berlin has won this year's DLR Design Challenge, an annual student competition run by the German Aerospace Center, with a concept called Hydra.

The aircraft is meant as a flying testbed for new aviation technologies rather than a production aircraft. Its central feature is a propulsion system that can reportedly be swapped out within a single day. That would allow different drivetrains, including hydrogen-based systems, to be tested on the same airframe under real flight conditions.

According to the organizers, this year's edition marked the tenth anniversary of the competition and drew 16 participating teams, a larger field than in previous years. Teams had four months to complete their designs, and the process was structured to mirror stages of real aircraft development. For the first time, student teams were supported by experienced DLR mentors throughout the process.

Entrants were asked to design a realistically buildable small aircraft that could serve as a flying testbed for emerging aviation technologies, meant to bridge the gap between research and commercially viable aircraft expected around 2050.

The winning Hydra design is described as an entirely new testbed aircraft aimed at future hydrogen propulsion technology.
