UK Aims for Routine BVLOS Drone Operations by 2027

The UK government has made routine beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) drone operations an official goal for 2027. The Department for Transport listed the target among five strategic outcomes for the sector in its Future of Flight action plan. The Civil Aviation Authority has also published a roadmap, CAP3182, setting out what operators will need to meet that commitment.

For now, activity sits mainly in trials and controlled conditions. NHS trials on the Isle of Wight have moved chemotherapy drugs by drone up to eight times faster than road transport. Drones also inspect offshore wind farms and monitor remote pipelines in real time.

A gap remains between isolated, individually authorised trials and routine, scalable operations. Scaling up would mean dozens or hundreds of drones sharing UK airspace every day, with standardised procedures, predictable costs, and regulatory confidence in safety. The industry has not yet deployed at scale the resilient infrastructure that shift needs.
