United Airlines takes delivery of first GTF Advantage-powered aircraft

United Airlines has taken delivery of an Airbus A321XLR, the first commercial aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney's new GTF Advantage engine. RTX, the engine maker's parent company, confirmed the handover on September 24, 2026. The Federal Aviation Administration approved the engine design the previous year.

RTX said the GTF Advantage offers up to twice the time on wing of current GTF engines. It produces 4 to 8 percent more takeoff thrust than existing models, which the manufacturer says supports longer range.

Rick Deurloo, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney, called the delivery the start of a new chapter in a relationship with United that spans nearly a century. United, he said, would be first to benefit from the engine's efficiency, durability and added thrust, which he described as well suited to the long-range A321XLR.

Ankit Gupta, United's senior vice president and chief air operations officer, said Pratt & Whitney has been a key supplier across multiple aircraft types, and that GTF-powered aircraft help cut fuel burn and improve reliability as the airline adds destinations.

Pratt & Whitney said the GTF Advantage is fully intermixable and interchangeable with the current GTF engine, simplifying operations for carriers like United that fly combined fleets. The manufacturer plans to move its entire PW1100G-JM production line to the Advantage specification by 2028. Existing GTF customers will also be able to choose the GTF Hot Section Plus upgrade for added durability.
