United's Dulles hub set for $20bn rebuild with new concourse

Washington Dulles International Airport has started a major rebuild of its facilities. A new concourse opens this month, the first step in a programme that also covers refurbishment of the main terminal and an expanded underground transport system.

The work is expected to add or renew more than five million square feet of usable space at the site. Roughly $20 billion has been set aside for the overhaul.

In August, the airport's board approved a $15.5 billion increase to an existing $4.4 billion budget, according to the source. Dulles is a hub for United Airlines and its second-busiest transatlantic gateway.
