Nashville airport moves toward renaming in Dolly Parton's honour

Nashville International Airport may be renamed after Dolly Parton. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority board backed a first procedural step on 11 September, approving a change to its naming policy by a 6–0 vote.

Officials stressed that the move does not settle the matter. The authority plans to talk with Parton's family, estate and foundation about how her name and legacy might be recognised at the airport. "Dolly Parton International Airport" has been the option most often raised in public discussion, but the board has not formally settled on any title.

The airport's IATA code, BNA, would be kept, according to the authority, sparing changes to airline schedules, reservation systems and passenger information.

Support for the idea grew from an online petition started in 2025 and picked up further backing after the singer died on 25 August 2026. More than 175,000 people have been cited as supporters. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell have both endorsed the proposal, with Lee calling Parton the state's favourite daughter and saying its main international gateway would suit a tribute to her music, charity and reach abroad.

Carrying out a renaming would involve legal approvals, branding, signage and coordination with airlines and government bodies.
