United to launch first long-haul A321XLR routes from Washington Dulles

United Airlines has announced plans to deploy its Airbus A321XLR on transatlantic routes for the first time, linking Washington Dulles International Airport with Amsterdam and Dublin. The service is set to begin in December, according to the carrier.

The A321XLR is a long-range narrowbody variant designed to open up thinner routes that would be difficult to sustain profitably with larger widebody aircraft. United has positioned the jet as a tool for adjusting capacity during the slower winter travel season.

By using a smaller aircraft on these routes, the airline said it expects to improve load factors and yields when demand dips.
