The Department of Defense announced $766 million in new contracts on August 25 to continue modernizing the B-52 Stratofortress's radar. Raytheon received $603 million for the AN/APQ-188 radar. Boeing got $163 million for airframe upgrades to support it.
The funding is part of an effort to keep the B-52 operational into the 2040s. The contract announcement also raised questions about whether the acquisition strategy for controlling cost and schedule is working, or whether the program has already changed what it means to be on budget.
