Vietnam Airlines eyes five more A350-900s in provisional deal

Vietnam Airlines and Airbus have agreed to work toward a deal for five A350-900 widebody jets. The carrier announced the provisional arrangement on 10 September during an official visit by Vietnamese president To Lam to France. The memorandum commits both sides to further study and assessment, with the aim of finalising terms and progressing through investment and procurement procedures under applicable regulations.

The airline expects to take delivery of the aircraft between 2033 and 2034 if the order is confirmed. Vietnam Airlines already flies 14 A350-900s and said that adding more of the type would keep fleet commonality high, supporting efficiency in operations, crew training, engineering, and maintenance.

The carrier sees 30 new widebody aircraft by 2030 as a strategic priority. It said the investment would support growth in international travel demand, expand capacity on medium- and long-haul routes, and strengthen the national carrier's competitiveness.

The potential order follows a commitment for 50 737 Max 8s firmed in February. While waiting for new aircraft, the airline said it will continue to lease additional planes to cover near-term capacity.
