An eruption of Anak Krakatau volcano west of Jakarta disrupted air traffic in the region. Volcanic ash was reported up to 50,000 feet and extended from Indonesia far into the Indian Ocean, with ash also detected at lower altitudes down to 12,000 feet. Jakarta-Soekarno-Hatta and Jakarta-Halim airports were temporarily closed. Numerous flights between Australia and the Middle East had to divert to Singapore for a fuel stop. Forecasts indicate the ash cloud is moving away from Jakarta at about ten knots.
