WestJet 737 MAX 8 crew log invalid GPS indications on Toronto approach

Pilots of a WestJet Boeing 737 MAX 8 reported invalid GPS indications while approaching Toronto Pearson International Airport. The aircraft landed safely and no injuries were reported.

A WestJet Boeing 737 MAX 8 crew reported invalid GPS indications on an early-morning approach into Toronto Pearson International Airport, according to flight log entries.

Flight WS652 left Calgary International Airport on the evening of Tuesday, September 15. About three hours in, while the aircraft was manoeuvring on approach, the crew logged an anomaly affecting the navigation equipment.

Recorded at roughly 04:20 UTC, the entries showed simultaneous "GPS LEFT" and "GPS RIGHT" invalid indications. The crew alerted ground maintenance so diagnostics could be carried out and the logging errors addressed before the next scheduled departure.

The aircraft, registered C-GEWJ, landed safely at Toronto Pearson. WestJet reported no injuries and no secondary operational disruptions. The operational impact during the approach was not immediately clear.

Commercial airliners carry redundant navigation suites, including inertial reference systems, that let them navigate when primary GPS signals are degraded or invalid.
