Zurich Airport employee shuttle operates without onboard security attendant

A pilot project at Zurich Airport has reached Level 4 automation, with two employee shuttle buses now operating without a safety person on board, monitored remotely.

Two automated shuttle buses serving employees at Zurich Airport now operate without a safety person on board. The pilot project has been running since March 2025 and reached automation Level 4 at the beginning of September.

The vehicles run on a fixed route that does not cross aircraft taxiways. Staff from Swissport and Krummen Kerzers monitor them from a remote cockpit and can intervene if necessary. Former safety drivers have been retrained for this role.

Since the project began, the two buses have covered more than 15,000 kilometres. After about four weeks of testing without passengers, employees will be able to use the shuttles. The pilot is scheduled to run until the end of 2026.
