Right-wheel brake failure causes runway excursion at Coimbra

Casualties unknown • Coimbra, PT

A Boeing Stearman experienced an uncontrolled runway excursion at Coimbra Municipal Aerodrome following a mechanical brake failure during landing.

What happened

On June 22, 2007, at 15:33 UTC, a Boeing Stearman, registration N62TS, was performing a positioning flight toward Viseu with a scheduled technical stop at Coimbra Municipal Aerodrome (LPCI). The aircraft was carrying one pilot and one passenger.

Upon landing at Coimbra, the right-wheel brake suddenly locked. This mechanical failure caused the aircraft to veer uncontrollably off the runway, exiting via the right shoulder of the runway before coming to a complete stop. There were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft.

The investigation

The GPIAAF investigation focused on the mechanical failure of the braking system. Because the aircraft is part of a museum collection and sustained no structural damage during the excursion, it was released to maintenance services for inspection and repair of the malfunction before being cleared to continue its flight to the intended destination.

Probable cause

A technical failure involving the sudden locking of the right-wheel brake during the landing roll.
