Incident Overview
Before departure, fog was reported at the airport. Witnesses noted a ceiling of approximately 100 to 200 feet and visibility of about one-half mile. The pilot reportedly attempted to contact the Flight Service Station (FSS) by telephone, but only a pay phone was available at the airport. That pay phone was out of order for outgoing calls, functioning only for incoming calls. Additionally, the pilot could not reach the FSS by radio while on the ground. He then stated his intention to take off and assess the weather while airborne.
Witness Observations
Witnesses saw the aircraft take off and then disappear at an altitude of about 200 feet above ground level (AGL). Others reported hearing a low-flying aircraft, and a probable flight path was established around the airport. Two witnesses indicated that they stopped hearing the engine before they heard the impact.
Crash Location and Investigation
The aircraft crashed near the approach end of the runway. An investigation was conducted, including an engine teardown, which revealed no preimpact failure.
