A pilot unable to locate the intended destination landed at an alternate airport, bounced on the runway, and flipped after skidding into an embankment.

What happened

The pilot was navigating toward a planned destination but reported being unable to visually identify the correct airport. Due to this navigational difficulty, the pilot spotted another airfield in the vicinity and elected to land there instead.

A no-flap approach was executed on runway 24 while a north wind was present. The aircraft initially touched down approximately 500 feet from the departure end of the runway. However, the landing was not stable; the aircraft became airborne again shortly after touchdown. It then touched down a second time very close to the end of the runway.

Following this second impact, the aircraft skidded off the paved surface and into an adjacent embankment. The forces involved caused the aircraft to flip over, resulting in significant damage to the airframe.

Probable cause

The pilot's failure to maintain control during a bounced landing on an unidentified runway, which resulted in the aircraft skidding into an embankment and flipping over.
