During an intersection takeoff, the aircraft lifted off normally but then returned to the runway, bounced multiple times, veered right, exited the departure end, ran down an embankment, and overturned. The elevator trim tab was found deflected two inches toward nose down.

Departure and Initial Climb

The pilot initiated an intersection takeoff with approximately 4,000 feet of runway remaining. He reported that the takeoff proceeded normally through lift-off to about 25 feet above ground level (AGL). From that point, the aircraft descended back to the runway surface and bounced.

Abort and Runway Excursion

Electing to abort, the pilot reduced power. However, the aircraft bounced at least two more times, then veered to the right. It continued off the runway at the departure end, ran down an embankment, and flipped over.

Inspection Findings

An inspection of the elevator trim tab revealed that it was deflected two inches toward a nose-down position. For reference, a full nose-down deflection is 3 3/16 inches, and the tab is in a neutral position when trimmed for takeoff.

Probable Cause

No probable cause was stated in the source.
