What happened
During the final phase of flight, the aircraft touched down on the runway without incident. However, shortly after touchdown during the landing roll, the nose gear collapsed unexpectedly. Following this structural failure, the airplane veered off the side of the runway.
Both the student pilot and a witness present at the scene stated that the landing itself appeared to be normal prior to the gear failure. Upon inspection of the nosewheel, it was noted that the tire exhibited uneven wear characteristics, which may have been a contributing factor to the collapse.
The investigation
Post-accident examination revealed significant structural damage to the forward section of the aircraft. The engine mount sustained substantial damage, as did the firewall and adjacent structures located behind the firewall. Additionally, the nosewheel steering rods were found to be broken, indicating severe stress on the landing gear assembly during the collapse.
Findings
The primary mechanical failure involved the nose landing gear system. The presence of uneven wear on the nosewheel tire suggests potential maintenance issues or premature wear that could have compromised the integrity of the gear during the high-load phase of landing.
