During dual instruction, a student pilot and instructor practicing touch-and-go landings experienced a sudden engine power loss after lift-off from a short-field takeoff. The instructor landed beyond the runway, hit a fence, and the aircraft nosed over.

Incident Details

A dual instructional flight was in progress with a student pilot and an instructor pilot (IP) practicing touch-and-go landings. After completing a soft field approach and landing, the student initiated a short field takeoff with full power and 10 degrees of flaps. Following lift-off, as the aircraft climbed through approximately 60 feet above ground level (AGL), the engine suddenly lost power. The IP assumed control and executed corrective actions, landing straight ahead. The aircraft came to rest beyond the runway end after striking a fence, which caused the airplane to nose over.

Post-Accident Inspection

On June 30, 1982, the engine was started and subjected to operational checks. No discrepancies other than an excessive magneto drop were noted during the magneto check. No other anomalies were reported.
