Incident Overview
A single-engine aircraft experienced a loss of engine power at approximately 300 feet above ground level during takeoff. The pilot executed a forced landing on a golf course, during which the aircraft collided with a tree.
Fuel System Examination
Post-incident inspection revealed the presence of water in the fuel sumps and carburetor. Additionally, the right fuel tank cap was found to be not sealing properly.
Pilot Statements
The pilot reported that prior to engine start, he drained the wing sumps and engine sump. He stated that some water was drained from the right fuel tank, but after sampling two drain sumps, no further water was observed. The engine drain was pulled for approximately 9 seconds, but this sample was not tested as it ran onto the ground.
Findings
Water contamination was confirmed in the fuel system components, and the non-sealing fuel cap on the right tank could have allowed moisture ingress. The engine power loss and subsequent forced landing were directly related to these fuel system issues.
