Accident Details
A Cessna 152, registration N5090Q, and a Cessna 172, registration N20100, collided in flight while both aircrews were conducting local dual instructional flights. The student pilot in the Cessna 152 was practicing a recovery from an unusual attitude after the instructor (IP) had placed the aircraft in a left descending turn. During the maneuver, the student had his head down while the IP was positioning the aircraft. As the right wing came down during the recovery, the IP observed the Cessna 172 on a collision course but did not have sufficient time to avoid the collision.
The Cessna 172 had been maneuvering and changing directions prior to the accident, but had maintained the same heading for approximately one minute before impact. The two aircraft converged from a quartering head-on direction at an altitude of about 3,000 feet.
Aftermath
Following the collision, the instructor of the Cessna 152 assumed control of his aircraft and executed a successful landing in an open field. The Cessna 172 crashed after the collision.
