Overview
Approximately 5 hours after takeoff, the pilot of an aircraft contacted Ontario Tower and requested radar vectors to the airport due to an engine failure. The pilot then switched to Approach Control and began receiving vectors to Ontario Airport.
Sequence of Events
At 0209, the pilot advised that he had run out of fuel. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a back lot in a residential area about 9 miles east of Ontario Airport. At no time during the communications did the pilot inform Air Traffic Control that he was low on fuel.
