Incident Overview
Two aircraft, a Cessna 172 (N29150) and a Piper PA-28 (N8465Y), were both departing from a private, uncontrolled airport at the same time but from opposite directions on the same runway. The runway was crowned in the center, which prevented line-of-sight between aircraft on opposite ends.
Pilot Actions
Each pilot stated that they made the appropriate radio calls on the UNICOM frequency before starting their takeoff roll. During their takeoff rolls, they approached each other near the middle part of the runway. The Cessna pilot stated he maneuvered to the right while the Piper remained in the center of the runway. The Piper pilot stated he swerved right, but that the Cessna went left, then right, then left again, and finally he pulled up to avoid a collision.
Collision
As the aircraft passed each other, their left wing tips collided.
Additional Observations
The occupants of the Piper had 32 bags of marijuana in their possession. The Cessna pilot, a medical doctor (MD), stated that the Piper pilot had dilated pupils, facial sweating, tremulous hands, telegraphed speech, a diaphoretic appearance, and showed general agitation.
