Incident Overview
The pilot of an aircraft experienced gusty wind conditions during an approach to an airport. According to the report, the nearest weather facility reported wind from 350 degrees at 12 knots. However, the pilot observed the airport windsock indicating wind from 310-320 degrees at 10 knots or less with gusts.
Approach and Landing
The pilot performed two go-arounds due to gusty winds and difficulty maintaining alignment with the runway. On the third attempt, a three-point landing was executed. After touchdown, the aircraft rolled approximately 100 feet at a speed of 50 mph.
Loss of Directional Control
At that point, a strong gust from the right side impacted the aircraft. The pilot stated that he applied full right aileron down with left rudder in an attempt to counter the gust. Despite these control inputs and the use of brakes, the aircraft could not be kept on the runway.
Runway Excursion and Nose-Over
The aircraft departed the runway at a speed of 35-40 mph, rolling an additional 40 feet before reaching a small decline, where it nosed over.
