Pilot rotated at 56-58 kts near end of blacktop runway; after transitioning to sod, aircraft lost lift, veered left, struck snow, and nose gear collapsed.

Incident Details

The pilot initiated the takeoff from the 1300-foot blacktop portion of a 2500-foot runway. The remaining portion of the runway consisted of sod. The pilot rotated the aircraft for takeoff approximately 50 feet from the end of the blacktop portion, at an indicated airspeed of 56 to 58 knots.

Sequence of Events

As the aircraft passed over the end of the blacktop, the pilot reported a perceived loss of lift, accompanied by a drop of the left wing. Subsequently, the left main landing gear struck snow present on the side of the sod portion. The aircraft then veered to the left, and the nose gear dropped onto the surface. The aircraft continued for about 100 feet at a 30-degree angle from the runway direction. The nose gear subsequently collapsed, causing the nose of the aircraft to pitch down, after which the aircraft settled back onto the main landing gear.
