A pilot reported applying carburetor heat and full flaps before landing, but after a midfield touchdown initiated a go-around. The aircraft settled back onto the runway during flap retraction, cleared obstacles, but later hit a power line and stump, nosing over.

Event Details

A pilot reported that during the landing approach, he applied carburetor heat and extended full flaps. He made a steep approach to a 3,000-foot sod runway. The pilot stated that he overshot the first half of the runway and touched down at approximately midfield.

Pilot Actions

At that point, the pilot initiated a go-around. He applied full throttle, removed the carburetor heat, and reduced the flaps to 30 degrees. The pilot stated that the aircraft accelerated slowly. When the flaps were further reduced to 20 degrees and then to 10 degrees, the aircraft settled back onto the runway. The aircraft passed the end of the runway with 10 degrees of flaps extended.

After passing the runway end, the pilot was able to pull up and clear trees and a power line. Following clearance of these obstacles, he lowered the nose, then turned to avoid a house. However, the aircraft would not climb over the rising terrain. Consequently, the pilot elected to land in a pasture. During the landing, the aircraft struck a low-voltage line. After landing, it hit a stump and nosed over.

Manual Recommendations

The owner's manual recommended zero flaps for takeoffs over obstacles.
