Incident
The accident occurred during a landing in visual meteorological conditions. The pilot reported that a gusty crosswind was encountered during the approach. Prior to landing, the pilot checked the wind sock, which was observed to be hanging limp. The officially reported wind was from 290 degrees at 5 knots with gusts to 15 knots.
Landing Sequence
The initial touchdown resulted in a bounce. During the bounce, the aircraft's nose shifted approximately 30 degrees to the left of the runway heading. In response to this deviation, the pilot attempted to perform a go-around. However, the aircraft touched down again. On this second touchdown, the nose landing gear collapsed. The pilot then reduced engine power as the aircraft departed the runway.
Aftermath
After exiting the runway, the aircraft collided with a fence and a ditch. The investigation report noted that the aircraft sustained substantial damage as a result of the incident.
