An aircraft collided with a tree during a night go-around after a downwind precautionary landing. The pilot had noted low fuel gauges and suspected a fuel leak. An alternator failure was found post-accident.

Accident Sequence

The aircraft was on a flight when the pilot observed low fuel gauge readings and suspected a fuel leak. He made radio calls indicating his intention to reach an airport before fuel exhaustion. Shortly after establishing radio contact, communications were lost and an electrical failure occurred. The pilot descended below the clouds.

He abandoned one approach because the field appeared "short and soggy." A subsequent approach to another field was missed due to a tailwind, as stated by the pilot. During the go-around, the engine quit and the aircraft collided with a tree.

Post-Accident Findings

Examination of the aircraft after the accident revealed that the alternator circuit breaker had popped. The alternator was removed and tested. It produced a voltage indication from 700 RPM to 4500 RPM, with a maximum voltage of 30 volts. The low voltage light bulb was incorrect, and the associated wiring was disconnected. Weather conditions at the time of the accident were conducive to carburetor icing.
