An aircraft collided with an unoccupied car after the pilot aborted takeoff due to an apparent engine power loss. Post-accident inspection found no mechanical reason for the power loss.

Event Details

During a takeoff roll, the pilot of an aircraft applied full power and accelerated to approximately 85 mph before rotating. At about 15 feet above ground level, the engine seemed to lose power. The pilot reported that the engine did not sputter or knock but simply failed to produce its customary power. Consequently, the pilot aborted the takeoff and landed in an open area beside the runway.

Collision with Vehicle

During the landing, the aircraft's right wing grazed an unoccupied car. The damage to the car was minor. After the aircraft came to rest, the engine continued to run, and the pilot stated he was able to taxi back to the airport parking area.

Post-Accident Inspection

Upon examination and testing of the engine, no reason could be found for the engine not to operate normally. The engine performed as expected during subsequent tests.
