Accident Sequence
While descending from airwork at 10,800 feet MSL to return to the airport, the pilot reduced the engine to idle and engaged carburetor heat. When the throttle was advanced, the engine did not respond, prompting the pilot to initiate emergency procedures and select a landing site. The initial choice of a dirt road was abandoned due to a crosswind, leading to an alternate grass field. The grass field provided inadequate deceleration, and after a 455-foot roll, the aircraft collided with a fence.
Post-Accident Findings
All post-accident tests on the engine were normal. The fuel system contained no water in the tanks or lines. The ambient temperature on the day of the accident was 55 degrees Fahrenheit, with a dewpoint of 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Pilot Comments
