Incident Overview
During a landing at an unspecified airport, an aircraft collided with a drainage ditch, resulting in the collapse of the nose gear. The pilot reported that the landing itself was normal. The accident occurred in calm wind conditions.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, after touchdown, during the rollout, he elected to retract the flaps, turn off the carburetor heat, and open the cowl flaps. At that time, the aircraft began to veer left. Despite applying rudder and/or brakes, the pilot stated he was unable to regain directional control. The aircraft departed the runway and traveled 344 feet before striking a drainage ditch and coming to a stop.
Investigation Findings
There were no reported witnesses to the accident. An examination of the aircraft's brakes and flight controls found no malfunctions, and the pilot did not report any system anomalies. The local sheriff reported tire scuff marks at the scene. Investigation of the scuff mark pattern indicated that the aircraft was drifting left at the moment of touchdown.
