An aircraft aborted takeoff after encountering a soft spot and upslope on a wet turf runway, then exited the runway, crossed a road and ditch, and came to rest in a bean field, causing structural damage.

Incident Details

The pilot reported that the turf runway was wet from recent rains. During the takeoff roll, the aircraft accelerated to near rotation speed before encountering a soft spot in the runway near midfield. At the same point, the aircraft also encountered an upslope portion of the runway, which further slowed acceleration. As the aircraft neared the end of the runway, lift-off speed had not been reached, prompting the pilot to abort the takeoff.

The aircraft continued off the end of the runway, crossed a road and a drainage ditch, and came to rest in a bean field. The pilot speculated that the right front seat passenger may have inadvertently been riding the brakes during the latter part of the takeoff roll, which could have contributed to the slow rate of acceleration.

Aircraft Damage

The incident resulted in separation of the landing gear and damage to the engine mounts and left wing spar.
