Engine Failure and Emergency Landing
Shortly after takeoff, the engine lost power. The pilot was forced to execute an emergency landing. During touchdown on a highway, the main landing gear collapsed.
Post-Accident Examination
An engine teardown was conducted. The magneto timing was found to be retarded. On the left magneto, timing was retarded 24 degrees for all cylinders. On the right magneto, timing was retarded 66 degrees for the impulse cylinders and 47 degrees for the other two cylinders.
Fuel System Obstructions
The fuel inlet screen was partially obstructed with lint and metal flakes. A paint flake was partially blocking the air passageway to the emulsion tube in the carburetor. A cylindrical piece of metal was found in the drive section of the fuel pump.
