An aircraft bounced during landing, skidded off the runway end into a ditch, and sustained damage after the pilot elected to brake rather than initiate a go-around.

What happened

The aircraft experienced a bounce while attempting to land. Following the impact with the runway surface, the airplane floated along the pavement. The pilot determined that the remaining runway length was insufficient to safely execute a go-around maneuver. Consequently, the pilot applied the brakes to slow the aircraft.

After braking, the aircraft skidded past the end of the runway and entered a ditch. The pilot attributed part of the loss of control to a gust of wind that reportedly carried the plane after the initial bounce.

Probable cause

The pilot's decision to apply brakes rather than initiate a go-around after a bounced landing, which resulted in the aircraft skidding off the runway and colliding with a ditch.
