Accident Narrative
While en route, the pilot entered a drainage area in mountainous terrain with the intention of crossing a ridge at its lowest point. As he continued through a canyon, the aircraft maintained a climb rate of 500 feet per minute, and he believed he could easily clear the ridge. However, as the flight progressed, the climb rate decreased. The pilot found himself in a position where there was insufficient room to turn the aircraft around. Subsequently, the aircraft struck the top of a tree and crashed near the ridge at an elevation of approximately 7,900 feet.
Pilot Statement
The pilot reported that he believed he had encountered downdrafts during the flight.
Aircraft and Performance Factors
The aircraft was estimated to be near its maximum gross weight limit. Its normal climb rate at that weight and altitude was computed to be approximately 330 feet per minute. However, just prior to the accident, the climb rate had decreased to near zero.
