Event Description
The pilot reported a smooth touchdown on runway 29R with a wind from 220 degrees at 8 knots. After lowering the nosewheel, the aircraft unexpectedly veered to the left. Application of right rudder and aileron produced no response, and the aircraft departed the left side of the runway. The landing gear subsequently dug into wet soil, causing the aircraft to nose over.
Examination Findings
Post-accident examination of the aircraft revealed that the left push tube connecting the rudder and nosewheel steering systems had failed. No evidence was found that this discrepancy or any malfunction existed prior to landing. Indications suggested that the failure occurred after the nosewheel had been forced to the left beyond its normal travel limits.
Wind Information
While the pilot reported a wind from 220 degrees at 8 knots, tower personnel stated the wind was from 230 degrees at 4 knots.
