Flight Planning and Weather Briefing
Before departure, the pilot received a weather briefing during which he was advised that visual flight rules (VFR) flight was not recommended. Despite this advisory, the pilot proceeded with the takeoff.
In-Flight Events
Approximately 12 to 15 minutes after takeoff, the pilot was forced to descend to maintain visual contact with the terrain. He subsequently deviated south from his intended route to avoid a rain shower.
Loss of Visual References
While maneuvering, the pilot realized he had flown into a boxed canyon. The confined area did not provide sufficient room to reverse course. The pilot therefore elected to climb in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) in an attempt to clear the surrounding hills.
Collision with Terrain
During the climb, the aircraft struck the tops of trees and subsequently crashed.
