Accident Details
At 2024, an aircraft impacted a gravel quarry in a 90-degree nose-down attitude. The accident site was located approximately 800 yards west-northwest of the College Station VORTAC, about 3 miles west of College Station. The aircraft had departed at 2016.
Weather Conditions
The pilot received a telephone weather briefing at 1610 and an in-person weather briefing at 1932, approximately 45 minutes before takeoff. Local weather deteriorated considerably between the last briefing and the time of the accident. An arriving pilot reported observing a solid cloud deck extending westward from 1 mile east of the VORTAC, with ground fog throughout the rest of the area. The increased fog was attributed to a local unforecast condition known as 'river effect' from the Brazos River.
Pilot Activity
There were no entries in the pilot's logbook for the 90 days preceding the accident.
