A pilot, warned to refuel midway, miscalculated remaining fuel. During arrival, engine lost power from fuel exhaustion. Aircraft landed on a street and struck a car.

Incident Narrative

Prior to departure on a cross-country flight, the pilot was advised to refuel midway along the planned route. While en route, the pilot recalculated the fuel remaining and determined that it was sufficient to complete the flight. During the arrival phase, the pilot activated the runway lights but did not see them until approximately 1,500 feet above the airport, when the aircraft was nearly over the field. The pilot attempted to descend and land but was too close to the runway to do so safely. The throttle was advanced to maneuver for another landing attempt. However, the engine, which had already begun to lose power, then failed completely.

The pilot subsequently attempted to land on a street but encountered traffic and instead executed a landing between the street and a house. The aircraft struck an automobile as it came to a stop.

Post-Accident Examination

An examination of the aircraft revealed that the engine had lost power due to fuel exhaustion.

Probable cause

The engine lost power due to fuel exhaustion.
