A pilot avoiding a car that emerged between hangars during taxi steered right, causing the right wingtip to strike a parked fuel truck. The car driver fled unidentified.

Incident Overview

After receiving clearance to Runway 16L, the pilot began taxiing through a congested area where the taxiway and an airport road were routed through a hangar and parking area. In that area, the roadway was adjacent to the taxiway and to the pilot's right as he taxied.

Sequence of Events

A fuel truck driver had temporarily parked in the road while delivering a fuel slip inside a building. The pilot stopped to ensure the truck was not about to back into the taxiway, then started to pass. At the same time, a car emerged from between two hangars on the pilot's left. The car turned left and, according to the pilot, "came up and under the left wing."

Collision

To avoid a collision with the car, the pilot steered back to the right, and the right wingtip struck the fuel truck. The driver of the car continued and was not identified.
