Incident Overview
During a cruise flight, the pilot reported an engine failure while at an altitude of 500 to 700 feet above ground level (AGL). The pilot attempted an autorotation, but despite lowering the collective fully, rotor rpm continued to decrease. The pilot maintained a forward speed of 60 to 70 knots during the descent.
Landing and Dynamics
The helicopter touched down with a forward speed of 40 to 50 knots. After touchdown, it slid approximately 100 feet and then rolled over onto its left side.
Post-Accident Inspection
An inspection of the engine revealed no evidence of a preimpact failure or malfunction.
Pilot Training Background
The pilot had received transition training for this aircraft in October 1982. At that time, it was recommended that the pilot return for proficiency training within six months, but no record of such training was found.
