Incident Overview
Shortly after departure, the aircraft experienced an unknown engine problem and returned to the airport. The left engine was feathered and the landing gear was partially extended. During the approach, the aircraft was too high on final to land. It continued down the runway, descending and slowing.
Sequence of Events
A witness reported that the aircraft entered a VMC roll and dove into the ground. Following the accident, a burst hydraulic line was found on the left engine. Witnesses disagree on whether the pilot reported erratic oil pressure. No evidence of an oil system failure was found.
Maintenance History
The last annual inspection of the aircraft was completed one flight hour before the accident occurred.
